Accommodations

Here are tips on places we stayed. We have slightly higher standards than the normal backpacker, and had a few specific requirements:

1) Air conditioning / heating (if necessary)

2) Private ensuite bedroom (i.e., private bathroom, not shared) – this was preferred and usually available, though we didn’t always have it. This option did increase cost.

3) WiFi in room, or at least in public areas – this was a strong MUST, though there were a few places we stayed that didn’t have it

4) Hot water for the shower – this was preferred and usually available, though we didn’t always have it

Please note that prices are provided for reference only and will fluctuate based on seasons and who you book with! We generally used HostelBookers, Agoda or Booking.com. While it may have been cheaper to just show up and try to find a place as many backpackers do, we preferred to have at least the first night booked in advance where possible.

We rated our accommodations based on cleanliness (Extremely, Fine, Good Enough, Leave!), location (Excellent, Good, OK, Poor) and overall value for the money (Excellent, Good, OK, Poor).
