On our final day in Vientiane, we decided to visit the Arch of Triumph, modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, except with four arches. Somewhere we read that the concrete used to create it was donated by the United States government, and was to be used for a new airport runway, but the aid was instead applied to create this gorgeous monument, hence the nickname, “vertical runway”. It was beautiful, surrounded by green landscape. It offered a commanding view of the city, which we appreciated that much more after seven flights of stairs. A nice breeze, and a view.
